As you may possibly have noticed looking at my picture (and especially if you looked at my class pictures...), I am a REDHEAD A real redhead, flaming red, porcelain skin, blue eyes freckles and I burn in the summer instead of tanning : a real carrot top ! |

After this exciting revelation, there are two possible reactions :

"Yuck ! I don't like redheads !" you cry at first. Then, feeling somewhat ashamed, you say : "well, yours is a little different... it's strawberry blonde, not so red..." It is almost a form of racism, like : "I don't like Blacks, but you're not the same : you're my friend..." |
"Yeah! Great ! A real redhead! She's hot! OK, calm down guys! Don't bother fantasizing, redheads, brunettes, blondes all the same -- Dream on buddy!" |

Ah well ! Being a redhead in France is a little difference (or handicap, some might maliciously say !) that one has to live with. We are the butt of some positive and not-so-positive digs and comments, starting with inevitably being called "rouquin" or "rouquine", instead of the real word for redhead : "roux" ou "rousse". But I'm not asking to be pitied on my sorry fate. My life has not been so bad. Long gone are the days when red haired witches were burned at the stake, I was never stoned by my schoolmates in the school playground, nor spat on in the street ! I have never been a "lonely" redhead either, since one of my brothers has red hair (the other is "normal", with dark hair !). Today, there are five redheads in the family, since my three children have red hair to varying degrees going from fair red to dark red. So now, dark-haired people are in the minority at our house !. We are in no way claiming any kind of superiority because of the color of our hair : we are like everyone else, no better, no worse. |
